Job summary: Developmental Quality position designed to provide the incumbent with the skills to become proficient and progress within the Technical Services Department. Work closely with quality, operations, and maintenance to ensure that optimum levels of performance are achieved for process control and product conformance to requirements. Participates with quality and operations personnel on specific projects to address development, implementation and maintenance of quality systems related to processes, materials, and products used in making the production of steel billets, rods, rebar and industrial wire. Position is responsible to assist in the supervising Steel Works Lab and Melt Shop Observers.


Essential duties and responsibilities: Work with Melt Shop to identify and prioritize improvement opportunities in throughput, yield, safety, and other key areas. Lead or participate in teams addressing these issues. Function as the primary resource in application of improvement methods. Champion the concept of Continuous Improvement in assigned area through application of appropriate Quality tools.


Supervisory responsibilities: Supervise 3 Melt Shop Observers.


Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or experience: Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgy from a four year college or university and three years related experience and/or training; will consider comparable work experience in lieu of degree.

Language skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer skills: Excellent computer skills including use of MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, and e-mail. Familiarization with statistical analysis programs such as Minitab is preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Familiarization with ISO9001 and ISO17025 certification process preferred.

Other skills and abilities: Mechanical aptitude and/or sound understanding of metallurgical and metal refinement processes required. Must be capable of supervising the day-to-day activities of the Steel Works Laboratory. Must be capable of handling multiple tasks and priorities.

Other qualifications: Goal-oriented, high achiever with motivational skills. Ability to design experiments, collect data and perform statistical analysis in order to improve operational performance. Experience in testing of metals/materials, experience in analyzing metallurgical structures.

Physical demands: Must be able to stand 1/3 of the time; sit 2/3 of the time; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel over 2/3 of the time. Must be able to talk and hear.

Work environment: Must be able to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather, extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the workplace is occasionally loud.
